For veterans with service-connected disabilities, it can be difficult to find housing that meets their needs. Thankfully, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has several programs to assist servicemembers with renovations and upgrades to improve home livability.
Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) Grant
These grants provide barrier-free home upgrades to make a veteran’s or servicemember’s own home suitable for independent living. They can be used up to 6 times and are open to those who receive disability compensation due to loss of use or loss of their extremities, severe burn injuries or blindness.

Special Housing Adaptation (SHA) Grant
These grants can also be used up to 6 times, for veterans and servicemembers who have lost the use of both hands or suffer from severe burn injuries. Funds may be used to buy, build or modify a permanent home to meet mobility needs.

Temporary Residence Assistance (TRA) Grant
This one-time grant is available to eligible veterans and service members who are temporarily residing in a family member’s home. You must qualify for either an SAH or SHA grant to access this program, and grant total are based upon which of those grants you have received.

Home Improvements and Structural Alterations (HISA) Benefit
This grant can be used to upgrade home facilities for disability access or any improvements necessary for the continuation of treatment. It can be used along with the SAH or SHA grants above.

Independent Living (IL) Adaptations
For veterans unable to work because of a service-connected disability, home adaptations to improve independence can be added to an approved Independent Living Plan.
