Going Green

Going green is good for the environment and for your wallet.  Here are some quick and easy tips to get you started:

  1. Turn out the lights when you exit a room.  Replace incandescent bulbs with energy efficient compact fluorescent lights to  reduce  utility bills.
  2. Wash clothes and dishes in cold water.   Cold water saves on water heating costs with no sacrifice of hygiene.  For greater energy savings, use the dishwasher and clothes washer/dryer late in the evening.  Using these appliances during the day produces heat, which in turn makes your air conditioner work harder.
  3. Unplug appliances when not in use.  Electrical equipment use energy and produce heat even when not in use.  Older appliances use more energy—an old refrigerator can use up to three times the energy of a modern model.
  4. While you are away for more than eight hours, raise your thermostat setting in the summer, and lower it in the winter.  For every degree raised or lowered, you can realize a one percent savings in utility costs.
  5. Check your heating and cooling equipment.  Systems run more efficiently when equipment is cleaned and serviced as recommended by the manufacturer.
